Deborah Sampson is a war hero, like
all veterans. Katniss Everdeen was a hero to her district. They’re both heroes
in their own ways but have many other similar qualities. Both Deb and Katniss
have sort of dysfunctional families. Deb’s
mom gave her up to be an indentured servant, the equivalent of a white slave.
Katniss’ mother went into sleep mode
when Katniss’ father died and stopped providing for her already small family. A
way they are different is that Deb’s mom had very strict control over her until
she ran away, pretended to be a man, and joined the military. On the other
hand, Katniss’ mom is very loose about her, mainly because she doesn’t like to
have anything to do with her. The reason for this is the mom has become very
bitter about the way Katniss’ treats Prim. Katniss is like a second mom to her,
better than the real one, and for this, Katniss’ mom disapproves. The one major
thing that makes them so similar is the fact that they both had to leave their
families for what seemed like a death sentence. Even though one chose to leave
and the other wanted to they still had their lives on the line while far away
from home.
